Girls Basketball Season Wrap Up
The girls’ varsity team wrapped up a highly successful season of 21 wins and 1 loss. They were the Utah 2A undefeated champions going into the state playoffs. For the first time in the history of Wasatch Academy, the girls’ basketball team made it past the first-round playoffs with a victory against North Sevier, 45-37.
However, during the quarterfinals against the Kanab Cowboys, the Tigers’ luck ran out. Trailing by five points with just over three minutes remaining in their quarterfinal contest against the Cowboys, the Tigers initiated a strategy that fell short, giving the Cowboys an opportunity to make 15 points from the free-throw line.
Wasatch Academy began to find its footing after halftime, and after outscoring the Cowboys 15-13 in the third quarter, the Tigers’ star Manu Oliveira tied the game at 38 points apiece with less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
Wasatch even took the lead, 42-41, on a Nataly Dunka layup with five minutes remaining, but the Cowboys refused to break. The Cowboys finished the game with a score of 67-58.
The girls went on to play in the consolation bracket against Layton Christian Academy the following day. The Tigers once again tasted victory, 50-42.
The girls’ season ended on Saturday, February 24, when they lost to North Summit, 38-67.
Though the state 2A title was not won, the girls had a great season. Their commitment to work as a team, train hard, and stay focused led them to many significant milestones, not only for the team but for the school as well. Girls Head Basketball Coach, Tony Giannotti, states, “I could not be prouder of how the girls performed this season. They stuck together as a team and really grew as players. They should be proud of everything they have accomplished this season.”
